Photo Essay - Sivamani The Magician

The famous percussionist, Sivamani delighted the audience at the Asiatic steps during his performance as a part of the recently concluded Kala Ghoda Festival. The backside road of Horniman Circle offered it's space for the stage while the staircase of opposite Asiatic Society building as the seatings for the eager listeners.

The road between was filled by plastic chairs for dignitaries. The place filled with crowd well before the performance. I was happy to squeeze myself in the front rows. Here comes the magician (read musician) with his wand (read drums sticks). The host for the day blabbered something which was barely audible except for the word A.R.Rehman (Big applause in the crowd).

Then started the hour long beating. Initial sounds brought little body shock. The sound system was so powerful I could feel the beatings throughout my body. Later the shock transformed into a body shake. The magician moved on the stage to pay his visit to all the instruments spread over the place.
Instruments were waiting for him to caress them & do the magic.

The onlookers amassed over the time. Small chaos here & there because of bystanders hiding the view of the by sitters. Music bits from Rang de Basanti. Taal, Rangeela were played for which Sivamani added with his own beats. The claps & whistles took their place once he had done with his magic. I started for my next destination of Kalsubai. Some photos from the performance follows.

Photo Essay - Carriage Ride

The historical Mumbai has left us with many architectural monuments. The fort area of Mumbai is a place where we can date buildings to various colonial periods. As a part of the Kala ghoda festival, Carriage Ride - a heritage walk from Horniman Circle (Once Elphinstone Circle) to the Ballard Bunder gateway was organized by The Bombay Heritage Walks group on 11th Feb 2007.

We had two orators, Brinda (Co-founder of The Bombay Heritage Walks) & Samudrika. They started off with the history of Bombay from Horniman Circle gardens. They explained to the 20+ audience about the various architecture periods of the Fort area. As the proceeded we also moved from Horniman circle to the Asiatic Society buiding. The zero point height measurement is based from a particular point of this building.

Then we moved to the MINT (RBI office), where we are allowed inside to view the old black & white photos of the original MINT and surrounding areas. From there we started again through the Ballard Estate road housing more heritage buildings now owned by private & public entities. Our final destination was Ballard Bunder Gatehouse where we found many portrayals of colonial Bombay & miniature models of the ships used in the near by dockyard.

The path we have taken once has carriages riding through it. Thus our walk named as Cariage Ride. Now the photos will speak for the buildings. Thanks Brinda for a such a beautiful & informative evening.

Photo Essay - Nrityotsava 2007

Nrityotsava - 2007 Dance festival as a part of the Mumbai festival happened at Amphitheater, Bandra Fort.
The performers showcased that it's not only the mouth which converse but the eyes and the dance movements of the body that speaks global language. Excellent performances. I missed the performances of the previous 2 days & the Chaau Dance festival the next two days. But I'm happy that I could able to attend the festival on 20th & 21st Jan 2007 being it a holiday for me from office.
With the dancers let the photos speak for them.

Photo Essay - Mumbai festival 2007 Inauguration

14th Jan 2007 - Mumbai festival inaugurated at Gateway of India. They should have spoken little & increased the timings of performance. Odissi dance performance for famous (?) bollywood songs was good. The "Urban Raga" fusion music was nice to listen. But unfortunately only 2 songs from them. At least they should have played a little longer than the time spent for instruments arrangements. Anyways there were these flexible poles standing before the Gateway. Australian acrobatic troupe "Strange Fruit" with their performance titled "Spheres". Wow they moved in all directions right, left , flying from top to down. They moved for the strange music & the various colours depicted the moods of the play. Here I stop & provide the photos which were taken there at this venue.
